What's on our mind?

Collaboration – with Martyn’s Law coming into force in Spring 2027 and just having completed the British Science Festival documentation, there’s plenty to think about in terms of collaboration and how fruitful it can be. But top of my mind is the incredible feeling when you work with someone who gets it, who challenges in the spirit of making it better, who is as excited as you about the impact of what you are working on. That’s the whole vibe of developing Show-Safe with Lloyd and the team at Halo. We all bring different and valuable experiences into the mix to make the course content and wider experience as useful and engaging as possible. Then throw in our collaborators at Pink Bows, ShowStop, and the UK Crowd Management Association and it’s a powerhouse of experience, knowledge and practice that makes my brain fizzy and my heart proud to be part of making a real difference.

Collaboration isn’t easy but it sure is rewarding. Especially when played as a team game to navigate new terrain.

Keynote and masterclass topics

Claire speaks and writes about decision-making, situational judgement, simulation pedagogy and the complexity of live events. She combines strategic research, more than twenty-five years of practitioner experience and active partnerships, so she can speak to both the evidence and the operational reality.

Complexity and judgement

How decision-making works in complex live environments: what the research says, what major incidents show, and what organisations can do about it.

Navigating decision load

The cognitive science of decision-making under pressure, including decision fatigue, cognitive overload and bias, and the practical tools that help teams keep their judgement sound across a long operational period.

Teams deciding under pressure

How high-performing teams make better decisions together: who holds authority, how decisions are shared out, and the shared language and conditions that let a team judge well.

Martyn's Law and the judgement gap

Why meeting the legal requirement is not the same as being operationally competent, and how organisations can build the decision-making capability that effective counter-terrorism and incident response requires.

The value and complexity of live events

Drawing on the Value of UK Outdoor Events research (2026): the economic, social and community importance of live events, and what it takes to manage them well.

Simulation as a learning environment

How simulation speeds up the development of decision-making and wider tacit skills and capabilities, the FailSafe project and Bearing's applied work.
